Camisole vs Tank Top
Share
A camisole is a light sleeveless top with narrow straps, cut closer to the body and usually made in a fine fabric. A tank top has wider straps that cover more of the shoulder, a higher neckline, and a heavier knit such as jersey. Both are sleeveless tops. The difference sits in three places: strap width, neckline height, and the weight of the fabric.
The difference in one table
| Camisole | Tank top | |
|---|---|---|
| Straps | Narrow, often adjustable | Wider, fixed |
| Neckline | Lower, often straight or scooped | Higher, closer to the collarbone |
| Armhole | Cut close | Cut wider and deeper |
| Fabric | Lighter: cotton, silk, modal | Heavier: cotton jersey, ribbed knit |
| Fit | Closer to the body, often with a bit of drape | Straighter through the body |
| Common use | Sleep, warm weather, layering under an open shirt | Everyday wear, layering, activity |
Straps and neckline
Strap width is the fastest way to tell the two apart across a room. A camisole strap is narrow, sometimes as slim as a shoelace, and it often adjusts with a slider. A tank top strap is wide enough to sit flat across the shoulder and is usually cut in one piece with the body of the garment.
The neckline follows from that. Narrow straps set further apart give a camisole a lower, wider front, which is why it sits well under an open shirt or a cardigan. A tank top holds a higher line and reads as a finished top on its own.
Fabric weight
A camisole is usually the lighter of the two. That is what makes it fold down to almost nothing and why it works as a first layer. A tank top in a heavier knit holds its shape on the body and stands on its own in a way a very light fabric will not.
Fibre is a separate question from cut, and it matters more for how a garment wears over years. Cotton is a natural fibre, it breathes, and it washes and wears in over time. Synthetics behave differently in the wash and hold heat differently against the skin. We put the two side by side in cotton vs polyester pajamas.
Cami vs tank top: the same question, shorter
Cami is simply short for camisole. A cami and a camisole are the same garment, and the shorter word turns up more often in shopping searches and in conversation than on a label.
Labelling in general is loose. Shops apply both words fairly freely, so the reliable check is the garment itself: look at the strap width and the fabric weight rather than the word on the tag.
Which one for sleep
Both work, and the choice usually comes down to how much coverage you want across the shoulders and how warm the room runs. A camisole in a light fabric is the smaller, cooler option. A tank top gives more shoulder coverage and a bit more structure.
What we make is 100% cotton with no blends, sold as separates so a top and a pair of pants are bought on their own. Tops are $48 CAD, pants are $68 CAD, and sizes run XXS to XXL across the cotton pajamas collection. The range is designed in Victoria, British Columbia.
Where a sleeveless top sits between sleepwear and daywear is the same question that comes up around soft clothing generally. If that is the part you are working out, what is loungewear defines the category, and loungewear vs pajamas draws the line between the two.
Common questions
What is the difference between a camisole and a tank top?
A camisole has narrow straps, a lower neckline and a lighter fabric, and is cut closer to the body. A tank top has wider straps that cover more of the shoulder, a higher neckline, and a heavier knit such as jersey. Both are sleeveless. Strap width, neckline height and fabric weight are the three things that separate them.
Is a cami the same as a tank top?
Cami is short for camisole, so a cami and a camisole are the same garment. A tank top is a different one. The words get used interchangeably in everyday conversation, and shops label things loosely, so the reliable way to tell is to look at the straps and the fabric weight rather than the name on the tag.
Can you wear a camisole on its own?
Yes. A camisole works as a top on its own at home, for sleep, or in warm weather, and it also layers under a cardigan, a blazer or an open shirt. A tank top does both jobs as well, and its wider straps sit more easily under a looser armhole. Either one counts as a full top.
Which works better for sleeping, a camisole or a tank top?
Both work. A camisole in a light fabric moves with you and takes up almost no room in a drawer. A tank top in a heavier knit gives more coverage across the shoulders. The fibre matters more than the cut here: 100% cotton breathes, and a cotton top can be worn on its own or with pajama pants when the room cools.
What fabric is a camisole usually made from?
Camisoles are commonly made in cotton, silk, modal or a synthetic blend. Cotton is a natural fibre and washes easily. Isla Lune uses 100% cotton with no blends across every piece. The range is designed in Victoria, British Columbia, and tops are $48 CAD with pants at $68 CAD in sizes XXS to XXL.
