What to Pack for a Weekend Away
Share
For a two or three night trip, pack one outfit per day plus one spare, a pair of pajamas, underwear and socks for each night, one sweater or jacket that goes with everything, shoes you can walk in, a small toiletry bag, your chargers, and any documents you need. Keep the pieces in one palette so they mix. A carry-on holds all of it.
The weekend list
A weekend is short enough that the list barely changes from trip to trip. Write it once and reuse it. Everything here fits two or three nights away.
- One outfit per day, plus one spare
- One pajama set
- Underwear for each night, plus one
- Socks for each day
- One sweater or jacket that works over every outfit
- Walking shoes, worn on the way there
- One dressier piece, if there is a dinner
- Toiletries in a small zip pouch
- Chargers, a cable, and a battery pack
- Wallet, keys, and any booking details
The palette rule does most of the work. Pick a set of pieces that share two or three colours and every top goes with every bottom, which turns three outfits into six without adding anything to the bag.
How much to bring, by nights away
Counts for the two most common weekend lengths.
| Item | Two nights | Three nights |
|---|---|---|
| Day outfits | 3 | 4 |
| Pajamas | 1 set | 1 set |
| Underwear | 3 | 4 |
| Socks | 2 pairs | 3 pairs |
| Shoes | 2 pairs, one worn | 2 pairs, one worn |
| Outer layer | 1 | 1 |
| Dressier piece | 1 | 1 |
What to sleep in
One set is enough for a weekend. Cotton folds flat and takes little room, so a top and pants sit in the gap along the side of a carry-on rather than in the middle of it.
Packing pajamas as separates is the useful part. A top on its own covers a warm night, the pants go on when the room cools, and the two pack independently. Isla Lune sells tops and pants separately, at $48 CAD and $68 CAD, in sizes XXS to XXL, and the cotton pajamas collection is where the current colours live. Everything is 100% cotton with no blends.
Size matters more when you are only bringing one set, because there is nothing to swap to. If you are between sizes, our guide to what size pajamas you should actually buy covers how the fit runs.
Going away with friends
A weekend with friends changes two things about the list. Mornings are spent together, usually in a kitchen or a shared living room, so bring pajamas you are happy to make coffee in. Second, there is often one meal out, which is the reason for the single dressier piece.
If the plan is mostly indoors, a set of loungewear covers the whole day and you can skip an outfit entirely. The line between the two categories is thinner than it sounds, and loungewear vs pajamas lays out where each one sits.
For a shared bathroom, keep toiletries in one pouch you can carry in and out. It saves unpacking a full bag onto a counter that four people are using.
Getting it into a carry-on
Roll soft items and lay them along the length of the bag. Shoes go sole to sole at the hinge end, with socks inside them. Hard or flat things, a book, a laptop, a folded jacket, sit against the back panel where the bag is stiffest. The zip pouch fills whatever gap is left.
Wear the bulkiest layer to travel in rather than packing it. If the trip starts with a flight, what to wear on a long flight covers the same idea in more detail.
Common questions
What should I pack for a weekend away?
One outfit per day plus one spare, a pajama set, underwear and socks for each night, a sweater or jacket that works with everything, walking shoes, a toiletry bag, chargers, and your documents. Keeping every piece in one palette means fewer items overall, because each top goes with each bottom. That list fits a carry-on for two or three nights.
What should I pack for a weekend away with friends?
The same core list, with two additions. Bring pajamas you are comfortable wearing at breakfast, since mornings are usually spent together in a kitchen or a shared room. Bring one outfit slightly dressier than the rest for a meal out. If you are sharing a bathroom, a small zip pouch for toiletries is easier to carry back and forth than a full bag.
How many outfits should I pack for a weekend away?
For two nights, three outfits. For three nights, four. The extra one covers a spill, a change in the weather, or a plan that shifts. Pick tops and bottoms that all work with each other so three outfits can be worn as six. That is the difference between a full suitcase and a carry-on.
Do I need a suitcase for a weekend away?
A carry-on is usually enough for two or three nights. Everything on the standard list fits, shoes included, if you roll the soft items and place them along the sides. A larger bag mostly adds weight to carry. If you are checking a bag for another reason, the packing list stays the same regardless of the bag size.
What pajamas should I pack for travel?
Cotton pajamas fold flat and take little space in a bag. Packing a top and pants as separates helps too, because you can wear the top on its own on a warm night and add the pants when it cools. Isla Lune pajamas are 100% cotton, sold as separates, with tops at $48 CAD and pants at $68 CAD in sizes XXS to XXL.
