What to Wear to a Sleepover - Isla Lune

What to Wear to a Sleepover

Wear a pajama set you are happy to be seen in at breakfast. A cotton top with sleeves and full-length pants covers the whole night, from the movie on the couch to the walk to the kitchen in the morning. Add warm socks and a sweater or hoodie for the hours before anyone actually goes to sleep, and bring clothes to change into the next day.

The thing that catches people out is that a sleepover is only half about sleeping. Most of the evening happens sitting up, with other people in the room, and often in someone else's family kitchen the next morning. The set that works is the one that handles all of that without you thinking about it.

The pajamas

Look for three things.

Coverage. Sleeves and full-length pants mean you are ready to sit on a couch with everyone, walk past a parent in the hallway, and eat breakfast at a table. That is the whole test, and a standard pajama set passes it.

Room to move. Sleepovers involve floors, sleeping bags, air mattresses, and a lot of sitting cross-legged. Pants with an elastic or drawstring waist and a top that skims rather than clings will be more comfortable across a long evening.

Cotton. A house full of people gets warm, and heating in a spare room can be unpredictable. Cotton lets air through, so one set works whether the room ends up warm or cool. Isla Lune sets are 100% cotton with no blends.

What to layer on top

The evening is usually cooler than the middle of the night. A sweater, cardigan, or zip hoodie over the pajama top covers the gap and comes off when it is time to settle. Warm socks matter more than people expect, especially on a hardwood floor or a basement carpet.

If you want the wider picture of what counts as loungewear versus sleepwear, there is more in what is loungewear.

What to bring

Category What to pack
To sleep in Cotton pajama top and pants, warm socks
For the evening A sweater, cardigan, or hoodie to go over the top
For the morning A change of clothes, plus fresh socks and underwear
Bathroom Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, hair ties, any skincare you use
Sleeping kit Sleeping bag or blanket and a pillow, if the host asked you to bring them
Bring along A phone charger, a card game or a film everyone can watch, a snack to share

Ask the host about the sleeping kit before you pack. Some houses have everything, some want you to bring a pillow, and it is one message to find out.

A sleepover party is a little different

Birthday sleepovers and slumber parties often have a theme, and there are usually photos. That shifts the choice slightly toward a set that reads as an outfit: a matching top and pants in one colour, or a print you like seeing in pictures.

Isla Lune comes in three colourways. Love Letter is a garden floral, Raspberry is a warm pink, and Moonmilk is a soft stone. Because tops and pants are sold separately, you can keep a set matching or mix two colourways on purpose.

Sizes, prices, and buying

Tops are $48 CAD and pants are $68 CAD, in sizes XXS through XXL. Selling them as separates means the top and the pants can be different sizes, which is useful if you usually sit between two on one of them. Everything is designed in Victoria, British Columbia, and made in small batches.

Shipping is free across Canada. Returns are open for 30 days on anything unworn and unwashed with tags attached. The full range is in cotton pajamas. If you are wondering how long a set should stay in rotation, see how long should pajamas last.

Common questions

What should you wear to a sleepover?

A cotton pajama set with sleeves and full-length pants, warm socks, and a sweater or hoodie for the evening. It covers you for sitting with everyone before bed and for breakfast the next morning, which is most of the time you will actually spend awake. Bring separate clothes to change into for the day.

What should you wear to a sleepover party?

Something that photographs well and stays comfortable for hours. A matching cotton top and pants in one colour, or a print you like, works for group photos and for sitting on the floor playing a game. Check whether the party has a theme or a colour first, since some birthday sleepovers do.

What should you bring to a sleepover?

Pajamas, socks, a change of clothes for the morning, and a bathroom kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, and hair ties. Add a phone charger and any skincare you use at night. Ask the host whether you need a sleeping bag and pillow, since some houses have plenty and others do not.

What should you bring to a sleepover for fun?

A card game, a board game, or a film everyone can agree on, plus a snack to share with the group. Nail polish, a face mask, and a speaker for music are all easy to pack and give everyone something to do together. Check with the host before bringing anything that needs the kitchen.

What should you wear to a pajama party?

A full pajama set rather than separate pieces that happen to be in a drawer. Top and pants in the same colourway read as one outfit, which is the point of the occasion. Cotton keeps a warm room bearable, and full-length pants mean you are ready for whatever the evening turns into.
