How Often Should You Wash Pajamas?
Share
Cotton pajamas are usually washed after three or four nights. If you shower in the evening and your room stays cool, the same set will hold up a night or two past that. If you have worn them through the evening as well as overnight, or the weather is warm, once or twice is closer to right. The number moves with the week rather than sitting still.
Where three or four nights comes from
Sleepwear spends six to eight hours between clean sheets, and not much happens to it in that time. Those are gentler hours than a shirt gets on a workday, which is why sleepwear stretches further between washes than the rest of a wardrobe does. Three or four nights is the point where a cotton set stops feeling newly laundered, and it lines up neatly with washing once a week.
Once a week is the rhythm most people already run on. If you put your sheets on to wash on a Sunday, your pajamas can go in the same day, and the set you switch to carries you through to the next one. Building the laundry day into a routine you already have is easier than tracking nights, and it is the same principle behind building an evening routine around things you were doing anyway.
What moves the number up or down
A warm room is the biggest single factor. Cotton takes in moisture from the air and from a warm night, and a set will want washing sooner in July than in January. The same applies to a heated bedroom in the middle of winter.
When you shower matters too. An evening shower means the fabric starts each night clean, and the set will comfortably reach four nights. A morning shower shortens it.
How you use them during the day is the third factor. Plenty of people stay in their pajamas through a slow morning or an evening at home, which adds waking hours to every wearing and roughly halves the count. Sets that double as what you wear working from home are on a two-night schedule rather than a four-night one.
| How you wear them | Nights before washing |
|---|---|
| Overnight only, cool room, evening shower | 4 to 5 |
| Overnight only, average room | 3 to 4 |
| Overnight plus an evening at home | 2 to 3 |
| Warm summer nights | 1 to 2 |
Tops and pants are on different schedules
A top usually comes around before the pants do. It covers more of you and it picks up more from a warm room. Pants often reach five or six nights without any trouble.
Isla Lune is sold as separates for exactly this reason, so a top can go into the wash on its own while the pants carry on for another few nights. It also means your rotation does not have to move in whole sets. If you are weighing that up, pajama sets versus separates goes through the trade-off in more detail.
Why cotton takes a regular wash so well
Every Isla Lune piece is 100% cotton with no blends in it. Cotton fibre is strong when wet, which is the property that lets it go through a cold or warm cycle every week for years and come out the same shape. It also softens as it goes, so a set that has been washed thirty times feels better than it did on the first night.
Washing often is not what wears cotton out. Heat is. A hot dryer and a hot wash shorten the life of a garment far faster than frequency does, which is covered properly in how to wash cotton pajamas so they stay soft along with the settings worth using. Keeping the heat down also keeps the surface smooth, and how to stop cotton clothes from pilling covers the same ground from the fabric side.
Given all that, a set washed weekly for years is doing what it was designed for. How long pajamas should last puts numbers to it. Our own cotton pajamas are cut from the same cotton across all three colourways, so the schedule is the same whichever ones you own.
Common questions
Can you wear pajamas twice?
Yes. Two nights in a row is well within normal for cotton sleepwear, and most people go further than that without thinking about it. If the set has only been worn overnight, in a room that is not overly warm, two nights leaves it in much the same condition as one. Fold it and put it back in the drawer between nights rather than leaving it on the bed.
How many times can you wear pajamas before washing them?
Three or four nights is the usual range for cotton pajamas worn overnight only. Beyond that the fabric starts to lose the just-washed feel, even though nothing is wrong with it. Warm weather, a heated room, or wearing the set during the day all bring the number down. A cool room and an evening shower push it up to five.
How often should you wash pajama pants?
Pajama pants can usually go five or six nights, which is longer than a top. They cover less of you and spend the night mostly over the bedding, so they hold the just-washed feel for longer. Because Isla Lune sells tops and pants separately, you can wash them on their own schedules instead of putting a whole set through at once.
Should you wash pajamas after every wear?
Only in specific cases. A hot night, or a set worn all day as well as overnight, is a reason to wash after a single wearing. For an ordinary night in a cool room it is not necessary, and cotton lasts longer with fewer trips through the machine. Frequency is a practical call rather than a rule.
Can you wash pajamas with regular clothes?
Yes, as long as the load shares a temperature and a colour family. Cotton sleepwear washes happily with sheets, t-shirts and other cotton items on a cool cycle. Keep it away from zips, hooks and anything heavy, since those are what catch on a fine knit. Full settings are in our guide on washing cotton pajamas.
