How Many Pajamas Do You Need?
Share
Three sets covers most people, which works out to three tops and three pairs of pants. That number comes straight out of the laundry cycle. If you wash once a week and wear each set three or four nights, two sets carry the week and the third sits clean in the drawer while one is in the wash. Fewer than three means doing laundry to a schedule instead of when it suits you.
The number is really a laundry question
Work backwards from wash day and the answer arrives on its own. Cotton sleepwear worn overnight goes three or four nights between washes, so a seven-night week takes two sets. Whichever set was worn most recently is in the machine, which is where the third comes in. That is the whole calculation, and it is why three keeps coming up.
The count changes if your wash day does. Someone running a load twice a week can live comfortably on two sets. Someone who washes every second week wants four or five. There is more on the wear side of this in how often you should wash pajamas, which is the other half of the same sum.
| How often you do laundry | Sets to own | Pieces in total |
|---|---|---|
| Twice a week | 2 | 4 |
| Once a week | 3 | 6 |
| Every second week | 4 to 5 | 8 to 10 |
Separates change the arithmetic
All of the above assumes tops and pants move together, and they do not have to. Pants stay fresh longer than tops, so a rotation of three tops and two pairs of pants covers the same week as three full sets and leaves you one piece lighter.
Isla Lune is sold as separates for that reason. Tops are $48 CAD and pants are $68 CAD, so buying to the ratio you actually wear costs less than buying in matched pairs. It also lets you size the two halves independently, which what size pajamas you should actually buy goes into, and pajama sets versus separates covers the rest of the case.
A practical starting point is two tops and two pairs of pants, then a third top once you know which colour you reach for. Our cotton pajamas come in three colourways, Love Letter, Raspberry and Moonmilk, in sizes XXS to XXL, and shipping is free across Canada.
Seasons do not add to the number
A separate summer set and winter set is a common assumption, and with 100% cotton it is not needed. The same fabric works through a warm July night and a cold January one, so the three sets you own in the winter are the three you own in the summer. What changes is what goes over the top of them. There is more in best pajamas for summer and best pajamas for winter.
Packing is a different number
Travel runs on a shorter count than home does, because you are away from your own laundry and the days are usually busier than they are at home. One set for a weekend and two for anything up to two weeks is the usual split, and the second set is mostly insurance. What to pack for a weekend away has the full list, and how to fold pajamas for travel covers getting them in flat.
Buying them in the right order
Owning three sets does not mean buying three at once. Start with one, wear it for a few weeks, and you will know quickly whether you want the second in the same colourway or a different one. Isla Lune takes returns within 30 days on anything unworn and unwashed with the tags still on, so the first piece is a low-stakes decision. Adding the rest slowly also means the sets wear in at different rates, which spreads out the point where you replace them.
Once the rotation is set it mostly runs itself, and it fits alongside the rest of a weekly routine. Building an evening routine is the same idea applied to the hours before bed.
Common questions
How many pajamas should a woman own?
Three sets, or six pieces, suits most weekly laundry cycles. Two sets rotate through the week while the third stays clean in the drawer. If you do laundry twice a week you can drop to two sets, and if you wash every second week you want four or five. The number follows your washing schedule rather than your wardrobe size.
How many pajamas do you need for a week?
Two sets cover seven nights. Cotton sleepwear worn overnight goes three or four nights between washes, so two sets take you from one wash day to the next with a change partway through. A third set is worth owning on top of that, since it is the one that stays clean while the other two are in the laundry.
How many pairs of pajamas should I own?
Two or three pairs of pants alongside three tops is a good working rotation. Pants hold up longer between washes than tops do, so you need fewer of them. Buying separates rather than matched sets lets you own that ratio instead of ending up with more pants than you use. Start at two pairs and add a third if you find yourself waiting on laundry.
How many pajamas should I pack for a week?
Two sets is right for a week away. One set covers three or four nights, and the second takes over for the rest of the trip without needing laundry in between. If you know you will have a washing machine, one set and one spare top is enough. Cotton packs flat, so the second set costs very little room in a bag.
How many pajamas should I bring to college?
Three sets works well in shared housing, since laundry days are less predictable than they are at home and machines are often busy. Three gives you a clean set even when a wash gets pushed back a few days. Cotton also layers under a sweater, which helps in a cold residence room.
